In Memory of Heroes
The 7th of October marked a tragic day etched into the memory of every person. In a devastating attack, over 1,200 Israelis fell victim to Hamas terrorists who infiltrated Israel from Gaza. among the victims were women, children, men, and soldiers, with hundreds taken hostage. The profound mourning experienced by Israel was particularly poignant in Yamam, where 9 of its operators and friends made the ultimate sacrifice.
Yamam swiftly responded to the call to head South to the Gaza border as soon as Israel was infiltrated. Despite the lack of intelligence and the element of surprise, the operators, driven by their fierce nobility and unwavering dedication, charged into action with no fear or hesitation.
Their destination was Sderot, a town near the Gaza border, where intelligence indicated hostages were held in the police station, with tens of terrorists threatening their lives.
En route to Sderot, the Yamam operators encountered terrorists attempting to advance north towards Tel Aviv. In the ensuing clashes, the Yamam warriors displayed remarkable bravery but suffered the heartbreaking loss of six comrades.
Once they arrived at Sderot, without hesitation, Yamam operators stormed the scene, facing gunfire and RPG attacks. Even with injuries, they pressed on, deciding on a strategy to rescue hostages. Some operators utilize a fire truck to lower hostages through windows, while others continued battling terrorists inside. The mission achieved success but came at a heavy cost.
On the 7th of October, a total of 9 Yamam operators lost their lives and 40 were injured in the line of duty.
Avraham Hankin
Avraham was a devoted father of four, including his eldest son, Eitan (11), and three younger daughters, Yael and Talya (8) and Gili (5). He dedicated 15 years of his life to serving in the Yamam, where he earned the title of an honorable and respected commander.
Known for his amiable nature, Avraham formed friendships with everyone he encountered, and his reliability was unwavering, regardless of the time or place. As a source of comfort to his fellow soldiers, he consistently instilled the belief that anything is possible.
His influence extended beyond the professional realm, as he served as an inspiration and role model to those around him. Tragically, on the 7th of October, Avraham lost his life while bravely fighting alongside his squadron, surrounded by Hamas terrorists.
Avshalom Perez
Avshalom, a recent addition to the Yamam unit, dedicated two years of service to the force. Despite being a new member, he was an exceptional fighter.
Beyond the battlefield Avshalom had many other talents, he was a pianist and an artist, yet he remained remarkably humble throughout.
A defining characteristic of Avshalom was encapsulated in the phrase, “When you think of someone, call them.” This sentiment reflected his genuine and approachable nature.
In the midst of promising life developments, Avshalom was on the brink of engagement to his girlfriend of a year and a half, Shiraz. The couple had just settled into their newly renovated apartment in September.
Tragically, on the 7th of October, their journey was cut short. While Shiraz was driving him to the base from the south, their car was struck by an RPG, resulting in their instantaneous demise. In a poignant gesture, Avshalom’s family presented Shiraz’s parents with the engagement ring he had purchased for her, symbolizing the unfulfilled promise of a shared future.
Chen Nachmias
Chen, a devoted father and husband to Noam (10), Alon (7), Ori (3), and Bar (1), dedicated 11 years of his life to the unit, serving as a sniper during the last three years.
His deep love for Israel was evident in his passionate commitment as a staunch Zionist, considering his role in safeguarding the country as the very essence of his existence.
Before joining the unit, Chen pursued a career as a veterinarian, showcasing his love for animals. However, driven by an even greater love for his homeland, he transitioned into a role where he could actively contribute to the protection of Israel.Outside his duties, Chen found joy in surfing, often sharing these moments with his children and friends.
Tragically, on the 7th of October, Chen lost his life while valiantly fighting against Hamas terrorists. Even after sustaining injuries, his unwavering determination led him to continue fighting, eliminating several terrorists before drawing his last breath. Chen’s sacrifice undoubtedly saved many lives, leaving behind a legacy of courage and selfless dedication to the defense of Israel.
Moshael Shlomo
Moshael dedicated a decade of his life to serving in Yamam, achieving the position of squadron commander just three years ago.
His humility, strong work ethic, and unwavering dedication to his role earned him the admiration and love of his soldiers and everyone who had the privilege of meeting him. Moshael had a remarkable ability to instill a sense of safety and reassurance wherever he went.
Last year, he entered a new chapter in his life by marrying the love of his life, Shachar.
Tragically, on the 7th of October, Moshael lost his life while bravely combating Hamas terrorists near Sderot in the south. Even when severely injured, his courage persisted, as he continued to fight and managed to update the unit via walkie talkie, ultimately saving the lives of his friends and fellow soldiers. Moshael’s legacy reflects not only his exceptional leadership but also his selfless commitment to the safety and well-being of those around him.
Stas Shainkman
Stas devoted over 17 years of his life to serving in Yamam. He embodied the qualities of a loving husband and father to his three children: Bar (8), named after Bar Refaeli, Leo (5), named after Leonardo DiCaprio, and Mila (2), named after Mila Kunis. His family held the utmost importance in his heart, surpassing anything else.
Known as an “old soul” and best compared to the “Captain America” of Yamam, Stas exemplified a gentleman in every aspect of his life. His strong moral compass, combined with a profound love for serving his country, made him a respected professional with a deep sense of respect for both his job and the people around him. Originally born in Russia, Stas moved to Israel as a child and embraced Judaism at the age of 21.
Tragically, on October 7th, he lost his life while valiantly fighting against Hamas terrorists who had crossed into Israel. Driving to the police station in the south to assess the situation for his unit, Stas encountered a group of terrorists who attacked him. Despite being outnumbered, he fought bravely, standing alone against tens of terrorists until his last breath. Stas leaves behind a legacy of dedication, courage, and unwavering commitment to the security of his country.
Dror Alton
Dror, who dedicated 5 years of service to Yamam, was not only a devoted husband to Klil but also a proud father to their one-year-old son, Erez. His love story with Klil began at the age of 14, and that love endured throughout the years.
An avid supporter of Zionism, Dror found joy in hiking across the diverse landscapes of Israel.
With clear values, he seamlessly blended sensitivity with unwavering strength as a fighter. Dror’s enthusiasm for the military world propelled him up the ranks in the IDF before he eventually joined Yamam. Universally loved and admired, Dror’s ambitious spirit and wholehearted dedication to Israel left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. He approached every task with unyielding commitment, making the most of every precious minute.
Tragically, on the 7th of October, Dror’s life was cut short by Hamas terrorists. His courageous fight not only showcased his bravery but also resulted in the saving of many lives before his ultimate sacrifice. Dror’s legacy is one of steadfast commitment, ambition, and a profound love for both his family and the land he so passionately defended.
Bar Sivan
Bar dedicated four years of his life to serving in Yamam and was happily married to Ayelet. They first crossed paths during their service in the IDF, and their journey together led them to marriage a year and a half ago. Bar’s love for Ayelet was profound and beyond words.
Known for his kind heart and empathetic nature, Bar had a remarkable ability to understand those around him. His determination shone not only in his exceptional skills as a fighter but also in his prowess as an amazing cook. Despite his considerable achievements, Bar remained remarkably humble, always prioritizing others over himself.
Tragically, on the 7th of October, Bar lost his life while courageously fighting against Hamas terrorists. Without hesitation, he leaped into the fray, showcasing both his understanding of his duty and his bravery. Bar fought valiantly until the very end, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness, determination, and love for others.
Yurai Cohen
Yurai, a dedicated member of Yamam for 4 years, was married to Adar, whom he met during high school. Their love story resulted in the birth of a beautiful baby girl, Niv (1.5). Just mentioning her name would instantly light up Yurai’s face with pride.
A perfectionist and consummate professional, Yurai earned the trust of everyone around him.
His role as a medic and a fearless fighter made him a true role model, ensuring the safety of those in his presence. Yurai was not only a reliable friend but also a devoted family man, cherishing his loved ones above all else.
Tragically, on the 7th of October, Yurai’s life was cut short while bravely fighting against Hamas terrorists in the South of Israel. It was a poignant moment as Yurai had always harbored dreams of moving to the south and raising his children there. In a heartbreaking twist of fate, he passed away fighting alongside his friends, leaving behind a legacy of courage, dedication, and love for both his family and the dream he held close to his heart.
Alexay Shmakalov
Alexay, a dedicated member of Yamam for 9 years, earned his way to the esteemed position of commander. In his personal life, he was in a relationship with Lior and was a loving son and dedicated brother to his younger sister Julia.
A talented and fearless fighter, Alexay was widely admired for his constant, infectious smile. Despite his quiet demeanor, he possessed a strong presence and a great sense of humor.
Yamam held a special place of pride in his life, and he often expressed that his purpose in this world was to protect and defend Israel with unwavering dedication. Alexay’s unique blend of stubbornness and kindness made him an exceptional commander. He was there for his soldiers, balancing professionalism with a genuine concern for their well-being. In his own words, “I fight in this war not for respect or money; I fight so the good will beat the evil in this world” (Alexay, 24th of April 2022).
Tragically, on the 7th of October, Alexay lost his life in Sderot while courageously rescuing hostages from a police station that Hamas terrorists had taken over. His selfless commitment to the greater good and his invaluable contributions as a commander will be remembered as part of his enduring legacy.
